DIY Floating Bench

DIY Floating Bench

Hello!  I hope you doing well!  Last week I got in the mood to clean out my kids’ closets (all four of them) . It’s not something I get in the mood to do very often so I took advantage of this rare feeling and spent quite some time going through all of their clothes– putting aside clothes that don’t fit, have stains, or aren’t ever worn and organizing like a mad woman. It feels so good to have their closets organized again (we’ll see how long it lasts)! A couple of months ago I shared a bedroom makeover I helped design for my friend’s daughter.   One of the most fun parts of the makeover was creating a reading nook by adding a custom “floating” bench.  My friend’s handy husband built the bench for around $100.  Here are the steps he took to build the bench!   How to DIY a “Floating” Bench  Determine where you want the bench to go.  This was the perfect empty space for a little reading nook.  They did not remove…

To Create Your Own Artwork or Not to Create Your Own Artwork?

To Create Your Own Artwork or Not to Create Your Own Artwork?

One of the easiest ways to save money on artwork for your home is to create your own.  It can be hard to find artwork that speaks to me personally and that comes with an affordable price tag. There is no other more personal wall decor than something you’ve created yourself.  It is extremely satisfying to be able to decorate your home with your own artwork. Today I’m going to share a couple of new paintings I did this past week in hopes that it will inspire you to consider (if you haven’t already) trying your hand at it. As usual I first found some artwork that inspired me and that I wanted to try and replicate.  I’m not an artist by training so I go into it knowing I’m not going to be able to paint it exactly the same but that I will use it as a direction to go in. I recently came across this artwork on Sarah’s blog, Life on Virginia Street, and loved it.  It has both a cheerful and…

A Tiny Toilet Room Makeover & Painting Cabinetry Advice

A Tiny Toilet Room Makeover & Painting Cabinetry Advice

Hello!  Now that I’m done with most of the big projects and makeovers in my home (at least for now) I’ve been working on some of the smaller projects that I’ve been putting off. This week I was able to mark one of those projects off my “small project to-do list” (I had actually forgotten to put it on the list but you better believe I will put it on just so I can have the satisfaction of marking it off)! So what was the small project that I did?  I painted the tiny toilet room and the tiny toilet room’s cabinetry.  Do you guys  know what a tiny toilet room is (or maybe you call it by a different name like my friend who calls it “the pooper”)? I don’t know how common it is but in our master bathroom there is a sink, a tub, and shower and then a separate tiny room within the bathroom that holds the toilet (think airplane bathroom small). Although I’ve done a lot of work on my…

Beginnings of a New Kitchen!

Beginnings of a New Kitchen!

Hello!  I’m excited to share a new project I’m going to be working on with a client friend.  She is interested in getting direction in updating her kitchen. As usual we will be working on a budget and I am confident we will be able to make this kitchen a beautiful, up-to-date space!   Here is our plan of attack:   1. Paint walls–Paint the walls Benjamin Moore Classic Gray     2. Paint cabinets –Paint the cabinets Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace (a bright white) or Sherwin Williams Alabaster (more of a creamy white).  I think we will be using the same method I used for my kids bathroom vanity to paint the kitchen.   I’ve always wanted to try it out on kitchen cabinets because I’ve loved the result in the kids bathroom–it’s so durable and has a lovely smooth finish.  You can find the tutorial, Here   Sherwin Williams Alabaster   We plan to paint the soffit area above the cabinets the same color as the cabinets and add trim to it to create…

I Painted My Tile…

I Painted My Tile…

Hello!  I hope you’ve had a great week! I can’t believe Christmas is only a little over 2 weeks away!  I still have a bit of Christmas shopping to do.  How about you?  I’ve been doing most of my shopping on Amazon this year which has been wonderful not having to go out in the cold and crowds! Today I’m going to share with you my latest little project.  A few years ago I taught (HERE) how easy it is to install a tile backsplash.  I demonstrated the process as I put up a mosaic tile accent around my powder bathroom.     I’ve enjoyed the look but if you’ve been reading for awhile you know how much I love clean, white, fresh spaces.  Lately I’ve felt like all the earthy colors in the bathroom combined with not great lighting has made the bathroom feel dingy. I decided to freshen it up by painting the tile accent white. Here are the results!         Did you know you can paint tile??  I first…

MAD for PLAID: Christmas Decorating

MAD for PLAID: Christmas Decorating

Hello!  I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving!!  Have you started decorating for Christmas?? This year I’m taking it slower than past years and have only put the Christmas wreath out on the front door so far. One thing I know for sure though is that I’ll be incorporating plaid into my Christmas decorating again this year! I like plaid all year round but around Christmas time I love it!   via Ballard Designs   I first remember falling in love with “Christmas” plaid when I was around 13 years old.  My mom made me this adorable plaid skirt for Christmas and of course I had to have her make me a matching bow in the same plaid material as the skirt (somebody please get this girl some sunless tan lotion)! 🙂 (Me with my Dad) Then in high school around Christmas time all I wanted to wear were plaid flannel shirts. To me plaid at Christmas time means cozy, classic, fresh and stylish. Now instead of dressing myself in plaid (although I do…

A Beautiful Bedroom Makeover for Zoe

A Beautiful Bedroom Makeover for Zoe

Hello!  I hope you’ve had a great week!!  I’m excited to share a budget bedroom makeover today, one I helped design for my friend’s 14 year old daughter, Zoe. Zoe is the youngest of four kids and the only one at home now.  The room we redid use to be her brothers. Zoe wanted her new bedroom to feel sophisticated and beautiful and have a subtle coastal vibe (she is 14 going on 28 no teeny-bopper bedroom here). Here is the BEFORE of the bedroom.     And the AFTER!   The paint color we painted her room is Benjamin Moore Ocean Air and made a huge difference in the space.  Equally important was that they painted all of the trim white (it use to be oak) and added white casing trim around the windows. This part of the makeover was only around $50 and made the largest impact (I love the power of paint)!!   The next most important change we made was how the furniture was laid out.  We took out the large…
