New Build Update

Happy Saturday!!  I can’t believe how fast time is flying!  My kids go back to school in just 2.5 weeks and we’ve been busy getting ready.

Today I just want to give you an update on what’s been going on with our new build.  Next week I hope to share some DIY projects!

Since I last posted, the windows were installed and the roof was put on.  They also installed the exterior doors.

Additionally they framed out the fireplace in our great room.

And framed the coffered ceiling in the great room.  I wasn’t going to do a coffered ceiling to save some money but my husband was adamant that he wanted it and since he usually doesn’t have many decor requests I obliged.:-)

This view is of our entry taken from the great room.

This picture is of our powder bathroom.  Here I am playing with tile ideas.  Do you like this one?  Or too busy for you?

This is a shot of our future kitchen.  Behind it is my husband’s future office.  One of the reasons we decided to build was so that he could start working from home.  A lot of insulation will be going in between those walls!:-)

Off the kitchen is a little bump out full of windows and a door to the back yard.

Here is the backside of the house so far.

I’ve had a lot of decisions to make on the house the past couple of weeks.  It’s been one of the first times in the house building process that I’ve felt a lot stress.  The kitchen is big financial investment and I wanted to make the best decisions possible for now and years to come.

I love all-white kitchens (island included) and had just assumed I was going to do an all white kitchen.  However, as time went on I received helpful feedback from both friends and readers that islands get a beating and that they wished they hadn’t done white on their island.

With four active kids I took their advice to heart and started researching my island color options.

My kitchen cabinet supplier only had two colors that I liked–this blue/gray color and a gray/tan color.  In a poll I asked my Instagram followers 75% said they liked the blue/gray one better for the island.  I had been leaning towards the gray/tan color so this made me really stop and think and question myself.

Although I love the blue gray color I am going to be decorating a lot with that color in my accents and think if the island is that color too it would be overkill.  Plus I feel like the gray/tan color may be a little bit more classic.

I’m hoping the white perimeter cabinets with the tan island will be as timeless as a fresh white dress shirt with tan pants.  After making the decision to do the gray/tan I found this island by Amber Interiors which helped me feel peace about my decision.

Another kitchen decision I had to make was inset vs. overlay cabinetry.  If you are new to the blog you can check out the conversation we had about it, HERE.

I spent days stressing about what to do.  Ultimately I decided to do inset cabinets on the perimeter cabinets and full overlay on the island.    There is a set up in the kitchen cabinet supplier showroom with this combo and I liked the variation plus it helps a little bit with cost by not to do the whole kitchen with inset.

I also had to decide what cabinetry I wanted for the bathrooms and the laundry room.  I did white inset in our master bathroom, white full overlay for the laundry room, and blue/gray partial overlay for my boys’ shared bathroom.

Since my cabinet supplier didn’t have many custom options for bathrooms I decided to not go through them for my powder bath vanity and daughter’s vanity.  I’m going to try and find some other options online.

I put together this mood board in photoshop for my daughter’s bathroom (still looking at mirror options).  What do you think?  Too fancy?

Welp, that’s where we are at in the building process!  HVAC, plumbing, and electrical work will be happening over the next couple of weeks.  Monday is my deadline to give the electrician my final selection on lighting rough-in placements so if you have any advice on good places for a sconce or any other thoughts I’d love to hear!

Thank you so much for reading!!:-)  I hope you have a great rest of your weekend!

P.S.   If you are in the market for outdoor furniture I noticed that my local World Market has their outdoor furniture 75% off!  There were some good deals to be had!

Thanks for the update! I love seeing the progress. It’s going to be beautiful! I think you should choose a tile you love for the powder bath. That’s one room in the house where I think it’s OK to go a bit wild. 🙂

The house is already looking amazing, Tamara! I can’t wait to see all the things you will do with it too! I think the mood board ideas are perfect for a young girl’s bathroom and I agree with Jenny that you should do the tile in the powder room that makes you happy! Keep the updates coming. So happy for you!
