The Easiest Way to Add Brick to Your Home

The Easiest Way to Add Brick to Your Home

Happy Friday!!   I hope you’ve had a great week!  I first want to thank all of my local followers who entered to win a free ticket to this year’s BIA Parade of Homes.  I wish all of you could have won but such is life.  Winners were randomly selected and are as follows Debbie Y., Phyllis H., and Jennifer J. If you won please email me your address at providenthomedesign@gmail.com and I will mail you your ticket! For over five years now I have been working on making our builder basic (and a bit outdated) house a home that custom fits our family’s lifestyle (click HERE for my home’s before and afters).  Some of those changes have been functional but also many have been solely for aesthetic purposes. Most of us are not lucky enough to have had our home custom built for our family and our specific tastes. It may take a little elbow grease to slowly make your home a place you feel reflects your family and that brings you joy but…

House Exterior Paint Refresh

House Exterior Paint Refresh

Well, if the past month is indicative of how the rest of the Summer will go posting-wise then it may be sporadic until the end of August (when the kids go back to school)!  Thank you for bearing with me til then!! l’ve had exterior paint and color schemes on my mind as of late because I am trying to decide if I should change my home’s exterior paint color. Our home is 15 years old and it’s exterior paint has never been refreshed.  It is pretty dirty/dingy looking up close so a paint job is inevitable. I don’t mind it’s current color which I would describe as a light/medium greige. CURRENT COLOR But if I’m going to paint the house I’m tempted to go white (because I love big, white houses and I cannot lie). This one’s a favorite right now. via Pinterest SHOULD I GO LIGHTER? A photoshopped depiction of our home lighter. However I don’t think this is our forever home and my hunch is that more people would want to buy…

One Room Challenge Week 6- Master Bedroom and Girl’s Bedroom Reveal!

One Room Challenge Week 6- Master Bedroom and Girl’s Bedroom Reveal!

Hello!  It’s the One Room Challenge reveal day and I’m excited be sharing two rooms! Doing one room makeover in 6 weeks is a challenge enough so I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to complete two rooms. However, both rooms needed to be done and I’m happy to report they both got done (many thanks to my husband for cooking dinner and doing dish duty during this time or I probably wouldn’t have gotten them both done)!! If you are interested in seeing the Before photos and the Moodboards for these rooms you can HERE. My goal for the master bedroom was to create a serene space that my husband and I could both relax and work in.  The addition of a sitting area was an important part to accomplishing this goal.   MASTER BEDROOM   I loved the unique design the of this dresser and although it had awful knobs when I purchased it switching out the knobs for more simple ones did the trick. More DIY artwork! I really…

10 Steps to a Beautiful Master Bedroom

10 Steps to a Beautiful Master Bedroom

Hello!  I hope you have had a great week and a good start to your weekend!  We had the stomach flu this week…sure makes me appreciate good health all the much more! As I mentioned in my home goals for the New Year post I want to finish updating my master bedroom this year so I’ve been busy lately looking through inspiration photos and for fairly priced bedroom decor. As I’ve been studying some of my favorite master bedrooms on Pinterest I’ve noticed some things they have in common. 10 Steps to a Beautiful Bedroom (at least for me) 1.  An Upholstered Headboard– Although there are some beautiful all wood headboards I find I am drawn more to upholstered headboards right now.  I recently made my master bedroom upholstered headboard for only $65, Here! via Victoria Hagan 2.  A Rug-  I have carpet in my bedroom so I haven’t needed a rug for comfort (functional reasons).  However, rugs are in all of my inspiration photos and I love how nicely it ties the decor in…

Three Years Ago Today…

Three Years Ago Today…

Three years ago today I published my first blog post (you can check it out HERE if you are interested).;-)  I had no idea what I was doing, just that I wanted to share something that was bringing me a lot of joy in my life…something that I call the 3 D’s…Decorating, DIY, and Design. I am a visual person and I am very influenced by my surroundings.  If my home is dark, drab, and cluttered then I feel heavy and weighed down emotionally. On the other hand if my home is light and airy and uncluttered I feel uplifted and buoyed up.  No matter how petty this trait seems there’s no denying that it is a part of me (anybody else wired this way??). Being a full-time “stay-at-home” mom (and a home body at heart) it is even more important to me that my home is a place that is visually beautiful and encouraging because I am in it a lot!:-) When I first realized this about myself years ago I didn’t have much money…

Beautiful Upholstered Headboard and Nailhead Trim Tutorial

Beautiful Upholstered Headboard and Nailhead Trim Tutorial

This past week I made a new headboard for my bed (as shown below)  and believe it or not it only cost $65 to make! My husband and I had been going headboardless for over 6 months (I know, audible gasp)!:-) There’s a backstory (if you don’t like backstories, no hard feelings, you can skim down to the section How to Make it ).  It all started when my husband and I began waking up achey and not fully rested.  It took a couple of weeks for us to realize that our once comfy, Deep Sleep Serta bed was no longer so comfy. It was our first purchase together as a newly married couple 12 years ago (a $400 steal at Macy’s) and we sadly realized it was time to move on to a bigger and better bed. After a ton of research on my part (I’m the researcher in the family) we decided on THIS gel memory foam mattress in soft and are back to sleeping like babies (the sound sleeping babies not the ones…

38 Go-To Paint Colors for Your Home!

38 Go-To Paint Colors for Your Home!

The past several months I’ve been compiling a list of paint colors that I would call the best Go-To-Paint Colors around right now (and likely for very many years to come). I wanted to give you the cliffs notes version to paint colors!  Sometimes the number of paint color options can be enough to make your head spin (in rainbow colors)! It might sound easy enough to pick a paint color but then you have a billion different hues with a billion different undertones and intensities.  It makes me feel anxious just talking about it.:-) This post is meant to help save you time and headaches from paint color option paralysis by giving you 38 tried and true beautiful paint colors to begin with rather than millions! I hope it helps!!  Please feel free to ask questions and if you want to share your favorite go-to paint colors in the comment section I would love to hear them!   38 Beautiful Go-To Paint Colors WHITE 1 Behr Pure White–  This is what I use for all of my trim,…

Beat up Table Turned Beautiful Farmhouse Table

Beat up Table Turned Beautiful Farmhouse Table

I recently helped my friend, Heather, transform her beat up kitchen table into a beautiful farmhouse table.  Her 13 year old daughter is obsessed with the Fixer Upper show and Joanna Gaine’s style.  She asked if I would help her daughter with a project she had found on Pinterest where Diana from Our Vintage Home Love had taken off the top of their existing table and replaced it with a farmhouse-styled top. \ via Our Vintage Home Love My friend, Heather, had a sturdy table with beautiful legs but the tabletop had taken a beating over the years with four young kids. With all of the screws under her table we thought for sure it meant we would be able to remove the tabletop however after taking a good looksy underneath we realized the top was going nowhere! As I was thinking about what to do the idea came to me…why don’t don’t we just install the wood planks right over the existing table top! So that’s exactly what we did! Before And the Afters…

How to Replace a Hollywood Light with 2 Vanity Lights & How to Patch a Hole in the Wall like a Pro

How to Replace a Hollywood Light with 2 Vanity Lights & How to Patch a Hole in the Wall like a Pro

In homes built across America the builder-basic bathroom vanity light consists of a light coined, the “hollywood light”. Although they give off a great amount of light they aren’t what I would call elegant or stylish!  When trying to achieve the look of the following bathrooms you can imagine how the “hollywood light” would get in the way of getting the same look!   Legacy CDM Inc. via Houzz Veranda Interiors via decorpad via BHG For the past 4 years (since we moved into our house) we have had a large 8 bulb hollywood light in our master bathroom that has been a bit of an eyesore. I made sure our hollywood light didn’t show up in my home tour because I felt like it ruined the look (sneaky, I know).:-)   As I mentioned in a previous post I found some pretty Pottery Barn look-a-like vanity lights at Home Depot for just $29.99 a piece.  I really didn’t want to have to pay an electrician $200+ to change the hollywood light into two over the…
