A New Brick Step!

A New Brick Step!

I’ve been crushing on the classic beauty of brick porch steps for awhile now.  So timeless! Photo by C Kevin Coffey Dwellings  via Houzz   Highland Homes Inc. via Houzz When we first moved into our house there was no step up to our porch and I noticed quickly that the distance was too large especially younger children and older adults. So, I created a little make shift step out of concrete 8″x12″ slabs stacked on top of each other and called it good for a few years (pictured below). However as time has passed a slab or two cracked and I was ready for a more permanent solution.  I of course researched making my own brick step and although I was intimidated by the idea it looked do-able so I did it! HERE’S THE RESULT: Note: The black stuff in the before photo is not mold, it is dirt and debris from the concrete slabs that laid there for years. AFTER Because the concrete around the porch was already stamped into brick shapes I decided to…

How to Paint a Gray Weathered Finish on Furniture

How to Paint a Gray Weathered Finish on Furniture

Hello!  I hope you’ve had a great week!  Today I’m looking forward to sharing an easy way to update or change the appearance of undesirable or outdated wood furniture. I’ve noticed that gray weathered wood furniture has become very popular as of late! via Target A friend/client recently asked me to help her refresh her family room.  As part of the refresh she bought THIS Storage Cube Organizer (affiliate link) to replace a too small console with no storage. It’s from Amazon for $83. Since the console had a gray weathered finish we decided in order to tie room together that it would be great if the end tables on each side of her couch could have the same finish. Her current end tables had an orange-y oak top and an rubbed oil bronze iron base.  To save money (and because I love making over furniture) I suggested we try to re-frinish the tops of the end tables in the gray weathered finish and she agreed! Here is the BEFORE: And now the AFTER: This took…

DIY Floating Bench

DIY Floating Bench

Hello!  I hope you doing well!  Last week I got in the mood to clean out my kids’ closets (all four of them) . It’s not something I get in the mood to do very often so I took advantage of this rare feeling and spent quite some time going through all of their clothes– putting aside clothes that don’t fit, have stains, or aren’t ever worn and organizing like a mad woman. It feels so good to have their closets organized again (we’ll see how long it lasts)! A couple of months ago I shared a bedroom makeover I helped design for my friend’s daughter.   One of the most fun parts of the makeover was creating a reading nook by adding a custom “floating” bench.  My friend’s handy husband built the bench for around $100.  Here are the steps he took to build the bench!   How to DIY a “Floating” Bench  Determine where you want the bench to go.  This was the perfect empty space for a little reading nook.  They did not remove…

A Tiny Toilet Room Makeover & Painting Cabinetry Advice

A Tiny Toilet Room Makeover & Painting Cabinetry Advice

Hello!  Now that I’m done with most of the big projects and makeovers in my home (at least for now) I’ve been working on some of the smaller projects that I’ve been putting off. This week I was able to mark one of those projects off my “small project to-do list” (I had actually forgotten to put it on the list but you better believe I will put it on just so I can have the satisfaction of marking it off)! So what was the small project that I did?  I painted the tiny toilet room and the tiny toilet room’s cabinetry.  Do you guys  know what a tiny toilet room is (or maybe you call it by a different name like my friend who calls it “the pooper”)? I don’t know how common it is but in our master bathroom there is a sink, a tub, and shower and then a separate tiny room within the bathroom that holds the toilet (think airplane bathroom small). Although I’ve done a lot of work on my…

Tool Time with Tamara- Air Compressor and Nail Gun Kit

Tool Time with Tamara- Air Compressor and Nail Gun Kit

When It comes to learning how to use new tools it may seems like I am pretty fearless.  However, that’s not the case.  If it wasn’t for my determination in finding ways to save money in my quest to create a beautiful home then I would have never picked up a power tool. Power tools are a means to an end for me.  If creating a beautiful home on a budget is something you want to accomplish learning to use power tools will be a great asset to you too! Truth is everytime I’ve faced my fears and learned how to use a new tool I have felt empowered.  It’s a pretty awesome feeling to do something you never thought you would or could do! I think that’s why DIY can be addicting.  It feels so good when it’s all done to be able to say I made this!  I created this for our family and home and saved lots of money in the process (but let’s be honest in the middle of the project…

I Painted My Tile…

I Painted My Tile…

Hello!  I hope you’ve had a great week! I can’t believe Christmas is only a little over 2 weeks away!  I still have a bit of Christmas shopping to do.  How about you?  I’ve been doing most of my shopping on Amazon this year which has been wonderful not having to go out in the cold and crowds! Today I’m going to share with you my latest little project.  A few years ago I taught (HERE) how easy it is to install a tile backsplash.  I demonstrated the process as I put up a mosaic tile accent around my powder bathroom.     I’ve enjoyed the look but if you’ve been reading for awhile you know how much I love clean, white, fresh spaces.  Lately I’ve felt like all the earthy colors in the bathroom combined with not great lighting has made the bathroom feel dingy. I decided to freshen it up by painting the tile accent white. Here are the results!         Did you know you can paint tile??  I first…

Everything you Need to Know about Painting a Room!

Everything you Need to Know about Painting a Room!

Hello!  I hope you all have had a great week!  This week has been all about getting ready for Halloween around here. With four kids ages ages 3-10 you better believe the energy level has been high with excitement for the big day! Tonight we went to our church Halloween Party and I couldn’t help but dress the puppy up too before we left!  We have a little division in our family this year of bad vs. good>:-)  Who will win???     A couple of months ago my friend Cindy did a guest post on how to paint tall walls (you can check it, HERE).  Today I am going to share a guide to painting any room!   I’ve now painted 2800 out of 3000 square feet of our home.  Additionally, a few of those rooms I’ve paint twice.  I also painted much of the condo we lived in before we moved here.  I’ve learned a lot along the way and want to share all I know about how to paint a room with you…

Laundry Room Makeover Reveal!

Laundry Room Makeover Reveal!

Alas today I’m sharing my laundry room makeover reveal! I asked The Home Depot if they would be willing to partner with me on this makeover and I am thrilled  that they said yes!:-) I shop there all of the time but a few months back when my three year old needed to use the restroom (he’s at the age where he wants to check out the bathroom of every store we go into!) I noticed a bunch of beautiful unfinished cabinetry  against the back wall near the restrooms.   When I went to inspect them closer I was floored by how affordable and nice they were.  They are about half the price of the pre-finished ones and in the shaker style that is very classic and popular these days! I immediately thought of using them in my upcoming laundry room makeover. When we moved into our home 4.5 years ago  the laundry room was as basic as you can get with just a rack above the washer and dryer. I didn’t like all of…
