One Room Challenge Week 5- One Week Left!

One Room Challenge Week 5- One Week Left!

Time is flying and we are already down to 1 week left in the One Room Challenge.  I am feeling the stretch to get two rooms completed so I am going to keep it short today to ensure I can get them both done! This past week I’ve been at the sewing machine quite a bit sewing up decorative pillow covers for the master bedroom and for my daughter’s room.       I also received the chairs I ordered from Amazon this week (you can get them HERE, affiliate link).  I bought two for my bedroom for only $180 each (which includes shipping)!  It is always a little nerve-wracking buying something like a chair online when you can’t sit in it and try it out. via Amazon Thankfully I’m really happy with them.  They look so much more expensive and although I would only rate them a 3.5 out of 5 for comfort (5 out of 5 for looks) I think that they will get more comfortable with time (sorry for the bad phone…

The One Room Challenge Week 4

The One Room Challenge Week 4

Hello!  I hope you’ve had a great week so far!  I dropping in today to share some of the progress I’ve made on the two rooms I’m making over for the One Room Challenge! First I wanted to share a lamp makeover I did.  I have had these matching lamps for years that I bought from Homegoods for my family room sofa table.   Although I’ve loved the shape of them they have always been a bit short for space.  After finding some better scaled ones (at Homegoods again) I decided to use these in my master bedroom makeover. However, they were not the right color for my bedroom.  So this week I painted them. Before At first I thought I wanted the lamps to be gold so I took off the shades and taped the electrical parts and spray painted them gold with THIS spray paint (affiliate link). I didn’t end up liking the gold color with the room so I decided to paint over them in gray.  I used some gray sample wall…

One Room Challenge- The Master and Girls’ Bedroom Makeover Week 1

One Room Challenge- The Master and Girls’ Bedroom Makeover Week 1

Hello!  I hope your week has been going well so far!   This week has flown for me! Today marks the start of the One Room Challenge hosted by Linda at Calling it Home.  Each April and October she challenges designers and bloggers to makeover a room in 6 weeks and to share the progress each week in a “link up” on her site. I participated about a year and a half ago when I made over our basement rec area. I’ve decided to join in again this round.  And I think I may even try to do two room makeovers at the same time!  Overly ambitious I know but I figure even if I only finish one room at least it will give me the push to have worked on the second room too. So the first room makeover I’ll be doing is our Master Bedroom.   As you know I’ve been thinking about starting this one for awhile.   I even made a new headboard  for the room several months ago after buying a much taller…

DIY Floating Bench

DIY Floating Bench

Hello!  I hope you doing well!  Last week I got in the mood to clean out my kids’ closets (all four of them) . It’s not something I get in the mood to do very often so I took advantage of this rare feeling and spent quite some time going through all of their clothes– putting aside clothes that don’t fit, have stains, or aren’t ever worn and organizing like a mad woman. It feels so good to have their closets organized again (we’ll see how long it lasts)! A couple of months ago I shared a bedroom makeover I helped design for my friend’s daughter.   One of the most fun parts of the makeover was creating a reading nook by adding a custom “floating” bench.  My friend’s handy husband built the bench for around $100.  Here are the steps he took to build the bench!   How to DIY a “Floating” Bench  Determine where you want the bench to go.  This was the perfect empty space for a little reading nook.  They did not remove…

A Beautiful Bedroom Makeover for Zoe

A Beautiful Bedroom Makeover for Zoe

Hello!  I hope you’ve had a great week!!  I’m excited to share a budget bedroom makeover today, one I helped design for my friend’s 14 year old daughter, Zoe. Zoe is the youngest of four kids and the only one at home now.  The room we redid use to be her brothers. Zoe wanted her new bedroom to feel sophisticated and beautiful and have a subtle coastal vibe (she is 14 going on 28 no teeny-bopper bedroom here). Here is the BEFORE of the bedroom.     And the AFTER!   The paint color we painted her room is Benjamin Moore Ocean Air and made a huge difference in the space.  Equally important was that they painted all of the trim white (it use to be oak) and added white casing trim around the windows. This part of the makeover was only around $50 and made the largest impact (I love the power of paint)!!   The next most important change we made was how the furniture was laid out.  We took out the large…

BIA Parade of Homes Preview & What’s Trending Right Now

BIA Parade of Homes Preview & What’s Trending Right Now

I look forward to our local Parade of Homes every year and this year is no exception (16 builders are participating this year so lots to see)!  You can imagine my excitement when I got invited to attend the media tour of the Parade a month before it is opened to the public (it opens to the public September 3rd- September 17th). I had so much fun touring the homes that I wanted to share the experience with you!  You will see in the pictures that the homes were in varying stages of readiness.  Some homes were fully decorated (most weren’t yet) while others were still drywalling and installing flooring. I think it was pretty neat to see it in progress because it made the bones and architectural details of the home stand out even more. I will be sure to point out some of the common trends I saw amongst the homes. Let’s begin with my two favorite exteriors!  The contrast between light and dark colors really makes them pop.   Two cool ceiling features!…

38 Go-To Paint Colors for Your Home!

38 Go-To Paint Colors for Your Home!

The past several months I’ve been compiling a list of paint colors that I would call the best Go-To-Paint Colors around right now (and likely for very many years to come). I wanted to give you the cliffs notes version to paint colors!  Sometimes the number of paint color options can be enough to make your head spin (in rainbow colors)! It might sound easy enough to pick a paint color but then you have a billion different hues with a billion different undertones and intensities.  It makes me feel anxious just talking about it.:-) This post is meant to help save you time and headaches from paint color option paralysis by giving you 38 tried and true beautiful paint colors to begin with rather than millions! I hope it helps!!  Please feel free to ask questions and if you want to share your favorite go-to paint colors in the comment section I would love to hear them!   38 Beautiful Go-To Paint Colors WHITE 1 Behr Pure White–  This is what I use for all of my trim,…

DIY Orb Ceiling Light Fixture

DIY Orb Ceiling Light Fixture

Hi guys!  Today I’m going to show you how I made the silver orb ceiling light for my sons bedroom makeover.   I’ve been a sucker for orb lights for a couple of years now.    This beauty was one that I fell in love with a couple of years ago when at a wedding reception.   Orbs are especially a great option in rooms that have a lot of linear lines like boxes and stripes.  The circular shape provide a nice contrast but is still clean and crisp. My friend Erin suggested the light below for my son’s recent bedroom makeover and I instantly loved it.  It is from Shades of Light.  The cost is $159 which is not horrible and I considered buying it for a little while. via Shades of Light   But the more I thought about it the more I became pretty confident that I could DIY something like it for a lot less. For the light part I used an old pendant (similar to the one below) that I…

Boys Bedroom Makeover Reveal

Boys Bedroom Makeover Reveal

Hello!  I hope you’ve had a great week!  This week I’m excited to share my youngest son’s “big boy” room makeover reveal!  My son is almost three years old and was ready to move from his crib to a big boy bed!  Can you tell he is proud of his new big boy room (or maybe he is just wondering if Mom is ever going to stop taking pictures of his room)?:-)   As a reminder below was his bedroom as a nursery.   And here is a photo of the bedroom before we moved in.   And here is the now!   The bed was free from a friend who was moving and didn’t want to take it.  It sat in my basement for a couple of years until we were ready to use it.   It had some screws showing and was kind of plain so I decided dress it up with some DIY faux drawer fronts.   I think it gives it a much more “expensive” look.   The knitted blanket at…
