Kitchen Makeover on a Budget Update

Kitchen Makeover on a Budget Update

A few months ago I shared the plans of my friend’s kitchen makeover on a budget.  I promised I would give you an update on their progress once they had painted the walls, kitchen cabinets, and added trim on the area above the cabinets (the soffit)! Well, they did it and I’m here today to share their progress so far! First here is a reminder of what their kitchen looked like before they got started on the makeover.   BEFORE   Here is the progress! PROGRESS   I had suggested a light gray color (specifically Benjamin Moore Classic Gray) for the walls, however, the hubby loves color so color they got! BEFORE   The black arrow in the picture below indicates that they will be replacing the countertops next (probably to a black countertop) and the gray arrow shows that a backsplash will be installed after that (probably a marble one). PROGRESS   My friend was nice enough to write out all of the steps she took to get from the Before to the Progress.…

One Room Challenge- The Master and Girls’ Bedroom Makeover Week 1

One Room Challenge- The Master and Girls’ Bedroom Makeover Week 1

Hello!  I hope your week has been going well so far!   This week has flown for me! Today marks the start of the One Room Challenge hosted by Linda at Calling it Home.  Each April and October she challenges designers and bloggers to makeover a room in 6 weeks and to share the progress each week in a “link up” on her site. I participated about a year and a half ago when I made over our basement rec area. I’ve decided to join in again this round.  And I think I may even try to do two room makeovers at the same time!  Overly ambitious I know but I figure even if I only finish one room at least it will give me the push to have worked on the second room too. So the first room makeover I’ll be doing is our Master Bedroom.   As you know I’ve been thinking about starting this one for awhile.   I even made a new headboard  for the room several months ago after buying a much taller…

24 Arm Chairs Under $250

24 Arm Chairs Under $250

Hello! I wanted to pop in before the weekend ended and share some of my favorite arm chairs for under $250. As part of my upcoming master bedroom makeover I plan to add two identical arm chairs (auto correct changed it to arm hairs):-) to the room. Nice sturdy arm chairs are usually a good $500 plus so two could cost you over $1000! I don’t have that kind of money to spend of chairs right now so here are some less expensive options that caught my eye. Note: About 90% of the chairs below come in several different color options so if you like the shape of the chair click on it and you should be able to see what other colors it comes in.   Click directly on the picture of the chair you like to see it’s price and info! (Disclosure-  Any chairs linked to Amazon are affiliate links meaning I receive a very small percentage of the sale if you purchase from my link.  Thanks!)     I’ll be back next…

To Create Your Own Artwork or Not to Create Your Own Artwork?

To Create Your Own Artwork or Not to Create Your Own Artwork?

One of the easiest ways to save money on artwork for your home is to create your own.  It can be hard to find artwork that speaks to me personally and that comes with an affordable price tag. There is no other more personal wall decor than something you’ve created yourself.  It is extremely satisfying to be able to decorate your home with your own artwork. Today I’m going to share a couple of new paintings I did this past week in hopes that it will inspire you to consider (if you haven’t already) trying your hand at it. As usual I first found some artwork that inspired me and that I wanted to try and replicate.  I’m not an artist by training so I go into it knowing I’m not going to be able to paint it exactly the same but that I will use it as a direction to go in. I recently came across this artwork on Sarah’s blog, Life on Virginia Street, and loved it.  It has both a cheerful and…

Pantone’s 2017 Color of the Year

Pantone’s 2017 Color of the Year

Hello!  The Pantone color of the Year for 2017 was recently announced.  For those who are unfamiliar with Pantone it is a global organization that provides a collection of colors that can be used consistently throughout the world.   Each year Pantone makes a prediction of what color will trend or take precedence in fashion and design that year.   Greenery was chosen as Pantone’s 2017 color of the year.   I was a little surprised by the choice (not that I’m saying that it was a bad choice).   One reason being that just last month Benjamin Moore announced their 2017 prediction to be Shadow.  Shadow and Greenery seem like practical opposites–one being  moody and mysterious and the other hopeful and energetic (although they do balance each other out well).   The other reason I was surprised is that Greenery seems like a very classic, timeless color.  In the past Pantone has chosen colors that are perhaps less commonly used and that may be trendy for a few years or a decade and then…

A Beautiful Bedroom Makeover for Zoe

A Beautiful Bedroom Makeover for Zoe

Hello!  I hope you’ve had a great week!!  I’m excited to share a budget bedroom makeover today, one I helped design for my friend’s 14 year old daughter, Zoe. Zoe is the youngest of four kids and the only one at home now.  The room we redid use to be her brothers. Zoe wanted her new bedroom to feel sophisticated and beautiful and have a subtle coastal vibe (she is 14 going on 28 no teeny-bopper bedroom here). Here is the BEFORE of the bedroom.     And the AFTER!   The paint color we painted her room is Benjamin Moore Ocean Air and made a huge difference in the space.  Equally important was that they painted all of the trim white (it use to be oak) and added white casing trim around the windows. This part of the makeover was only around $50 and made the largest impact (I love the power of paint)!!   The next most important change we made was how the furniture was laid out.  We took out the large…

Benjamin Moore’s 2017 Paint Color Forecast

Benjamin Moore’s 2017 Paint Color Forecast

Hello! I hope you guys are well!  Benjamin Moore recently announced their paint color trend forecast for 2017. These are the paint colors that they believe will be popular in 2017.   I always love talking about paint colors because I’ve seen just how powerful a change of paint color in a room can be in transforming a space from blah to beautiful and often for only $50 or less! I mentioned in last weeks post (all about how to paint a room) that although I don’t use Benjamin Moore paints I do often get their paint colors made in other brands. Benjamin Moore does an amazing job at creating beautiful, crisp, and on trend paint colors! I used their last year’s 2016 Paint color of the year, Simply White, in my 2 story entry way and living room and still love it.   This year’s 2017 Benjamin Moore Paint Color of the Year is Shadow. Design 101- 8 Tips to Becoming a Bookshelf Styling Pro

Design 101- 8 Tips to Becoming a Bookshelf Styling Pro

Hello!  I hope you’ve had a wonderful week! I’ve gotten some questions lately on how to style bookshelves and so today I’m going to share my 8 tips to becoming a master bookshelf stylist in your own home! This isn’t something that I intrinsically knew how to do.  It took a lot studying and some practice (and I’m sure I still have more to learn) but I am confident this post will help you decorate your bookshelves like a pro!   8 Tips to a Well-Styled Bookshelf   Tip #1. Layering–  Just like layering a room is important to creating depth and interest so is layering a shelf (the post about layering a room can be found HERE).  Layering a shelf is best achieved when you stack items on top of each other with the smallest item on the very top. via Ballard Designs   For example, if you have a beautiful decorative bowl you can add layers to it by adding a couple of large books underneath it and then another layer by putting decorative…

Decorating 101- How to Create a Mood Board

Decorating 101- How to Create a Mood Board

Hello!  I hope you had a great week!  This week I’ve started putting together an inspiration board (or mood board) for my upcoming laundry room makeover. If you aren’t familiar with what a mood board is– it is basically pulling pictures, paint colors, flooring samples, tile samples, furniture pieces etc. together in one spot to see how they all look in unison and to gain a clear vision for where your space is going. You can do this with actual physical materials or you can use the computer to get a virtual representation. Here are some examples of both kinds of mood boards   Real Life via Studio Mcgee via Studio Mcgee   Virtual via Young House Love via Young House Love Mood boards are fairly simple to make. 3 Steps to Creating a Mood Board 1. Search for Inspiration.  Pinterest and Houzz are great free resources for decorating inspiration.  I have Pinterest boards for each type of room in the house and when I find a space I like I pin it to that…
