MAD for PLAID: Christmas Decorating

MAD for PLAID: Christmas Decorating

Hello!  I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving!!  Have you started decorating for Christmas?? This year I’m taking it slower than past years and have only put the Christmas wreath out on the front door so far. One thing I know for sure though is that I’ll be incorporating plaid into my Christmas decorating again this year! I like plaid all year round but around Christmas time I love it!   via Ballard Designs   I first remember falling in love with “Christmas” plaid when I was around 13 years old.  My mom made me this adorable plaid skirt for Christmas and of course I had to have her make me a matching bow in the same plaid material as the skirt (somebody please get this girl some sunless tan lotion)! 🙂 (Me with my Dad) Then in high school around Christmas time all I wanted to wear were plaid flannel shirts. To me plaid at Christmas time means cozy, classic, fresh and stylish. Now instead of dressing myself in plaid (although I do…

DIY Topiary Tutorial –Easy & Inexpensive!

DIY Topiary Tutorial –Easy & Inexpensive!

Topiaries are a timeless decor piece and are extremely versatile! Fiorella Design via Houzz Studio Dearborn via Houzz Smith & Vansant Architects PC via Houzz   The only problem is they also can be super pricey.  For example these two small topiaries are on sale at Kohl’s right now for $66.39.  That’s $33 per topiary and it is not uncommon to see them go for much much more than that (clarification the extra much was not a typo)!:-) via Kohls   I recently spotted a topiary form on one of those rare occasions when I was without my kids and found myself meandering in the craft aisle at Walmart (oh the life of a mom with young kids).:-)   The topiary form was only $4.96 and the wheels immediately started turning on how I could transform it with just a few bucks.   I ended up buying two and as you can see below each has it’s own place in our Christmas decor right now.     I just love them!  If you haven’t read my post on…

11 Money-Saving Tips for Decorating Your Christmas Tree

11 Money-Saving Tips for Decorating Your Christmas Tree

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!!  We had Thanksgiving at my parent’s home this year and enjoyed spending time with them as well as one of my sisters and and one of my brothers and his family!:-) I want to thank everyone who participated in the Homeright Paint Sprayer Giveaway!  You are all deserving of a Homeright paint sprayer in my book but there could only be one and the rafflecopter chose,  Julia Jones of Arizona!  Congrats, Julia (the good news for those who didn’t win is that Christmas is right around the corner)!;-)   If you are anything like our family once Thanksgiving is over we start thinking about putting up the Christmas tree and Christmas decorating.  I’ve been thinking about it even earlier this year because I joined a Christmas home tour blog hop and the designated day to share my Christmas home tour is Wednesday, December 2nd!     I don’t think I’ve ever had all my Christmas decorating done before the 2nd so wish me luck!!   This year will…

DIY Cobblestone Boot/Shoe Tray

DIY Cobblestone Boot/Shoe Tray

Hello!  I hope you’ve had a good week!!  This week in Ohio the weather has gotten wet and chilly.  I can definitely tell Fall is here and that Winter is coming! In the past I have laid down an old towel by the door to protect the floors from wet boots and shoes during the Fall and Winter months. Our past couple of winters have been so snowy  that I’ve had the towel down by the door for weeks at a time. I’ll be very frank, it drives me nuts!  It ends up looking so messy and dingy and makes the dreary Winter feel even more dreary. So I was motivated this week to find a solution to contain the wet boots and shoes in a more attractive, upbeat way. Here is my solution below, a DIY Cobblestone Boot/Shoe Tray.     I’m sure I looked pretty silly taking the picture above as I was lying stomach down on the floor with  the camera out in front of me!:-) This project is super inexpensive and…

Christmas Home Tour

Christmas Home Tour

*****  I am participating in Jennifer Rizzo’s fabulous Holiday House Party so be sure to check it out and be inspired!   Welcome to our home!  I’m glad you are here for our Christmas home tour.  If you are new here don’t hesitate to ask questions.  I do a lot of DIY and bargain shopping so if you see something you like I probably have done a tutorial for it already and can share a source!   We will start with our hallway where previously a closet is now a makeshift mudroom.  We love being able to drop our coats, boots, and bags here. I purchased the live wreath from Costco just for the (sm)ell of it.:0)  We don’t do the live tree thing yet so it has been so nice to have the pine fragrance in our home.  It was only $15 which is an amazing deal considering it is so large and attractive.   To the right of the entry is our living room. I added red bows to my diy topiaries and the diy table top trees on the coffee table are made out of foam board and…

A Coastal Christmas Tablescape

A Coastal Christmas Tablescape

I had fun this past week creating a coastal Christmas tablescape. It’s part of our dining room Christmas décor and will be used in a couple of weeks when family comes into town. I’m not a prim and proper person. I love elegance but for me it has to be balanced with a large dose of casual, a style I call casual elegance (and which I explain more here). Dining rooms are often the most formal rooms in a house. I’ve noticed that I like to throw a bit of coastal into my dining room decorating perhaps it’s to keep the vibe of the room on a more relaxed note. Christmas decorating this year was no exception. I came across this fern tablecloth at Walmart on clearance for only $4 (yep I’m not too good for Walmart or wrinkled tablecloths).:-) I coupled the green ferns and other greenery with a rich, deep blue hue found in the plates, table runner, and drapery.   The table runner was made from fabric I found for 40% off at Hobby Lobby.  I…

Holiday Wreath Card Display

Holiday Wreath Card Display

If it hasn’t started for you already I’m sure it will soon.  What will start soon??  The ensuing trickle of Holiday cards in the mail, of course!;-)  It is the only time of year I get “good” mail and I love it! Instead of placing the Holiday greetings I receive in a stack on the counter (like I use to do) I love using them as festive Holiday home décor. Over the past couple of years I have hung lighted greenery around our powder bathroom door in the hallway and have added the Christmas greetings cards we receive with double-sided tape around the door. It is fun to see how each day the doorway becomes more and more full of color and happy reminders of loved ones.     This year I was inspired to try a new way of displaying our cards.  As I was flipping through the winter Pottery Barn catalog I came across the space below.  There is much to love about the photo– the stone, the oversized windows, and the layered bedding exuding a Christmas vibe.  But what…

DIY Sparkling Pinecone Ornaments

DIY Sparkling Pinecone Ornaments

This week I fell in love with this beauty! Isn’t she captivating??  I didn’t know I had a thing for sparkling pinecones but apparently I do.:-)   As often is the case I got the inspiration to make my gleaming pinecone ornaments from a recent Ballard Designs catalog. via Ballard Designs   I think they are beautiful and charming and they weren’t horribly priced at $19 for a set of 6 but I wanted to save some money and try doing them myself. My goal was to make some for myself and some as teacher’s gifts.  I don’t know about you but what to give teachers for Christmas and end of the year presents has always been a pain in the buttewey for me! I just wish that with all the paper work we parents receive at the beginning of the school year that there was a handout with the below survey filled out from each teacher.   It would take a lot of the guess work out of it and then they might actually get something they want!    Oh well, hopefully they will…
