Everything you Need to Know about Painting a Room!

Everything you Need to Know about Painting a Room!

Hello!  I hope you all have had a great week!  This week has been all about getting ready for Halloween around here. With four kids ages ages 3-10 you better believe the energy level has been high with excitement for the big day! Tonight we went to our church Halloween Party and I couldn’t help but dress the puppy up too before we left!  We have a little division in our family this year of bad vs. good>:-)  Who will win???     A couple of months ago my friend Cindy did a guest post on how to paint tall walls (you can check it, HERE).  Today I am going to share a guide to painting any room!   I’ve now painted 2800 out of 3000 square feet of our home.  Additionally, a few of those rooms I’ve paint twice.  I also painted much of the condo we lived in before we moved here.  I’ve learned a lot along the way and want to share all I know about how to paint a room with you…

Laundry Room Makeover Reveal!

Laundry Room Makeover Reveal!

Alas today I’m sharing my laundry room makeover reveal! I asked The Home Depot if they would be willing to partner with me on this makeover and I am thrilled  that they said yes!:-) I shop there all of the time but a few months back when my three year old needed to use the restroom (he’s at the age where he wants to check out the bathroom of every store we go into!) I noticed a bunch of beautiful unfinished cabinetry  against the back wall near the restrooms.   When I went to inspect them closer I was floored by how affordable and nice they were.  They are about half the price of the pre-finished ones and in the shaker style that is very classic and popular these days! I immediately thought of using them in my upcoming laundry room makeover. When we moved into our home 4.5 years ago  the laundry room was as basic as you can get with just a rack above the washer and dryer. I didn’t like all of…

Peel and Stick, Removable Wallpaper Options!

Peel and Stick, Removable Wallpaper Options!

Hello!  I hope you’ve had a great week! I’m popping in today to share a cool “new” (at least it’s new to me) product that I came across this week!  I’m well into my laundry room makeover and was searching for some kind of backsplash or accent wall above my washer and dryer. I love the look of wallpaper especially in a laundry room! Martha O’Hara Interiors via Houzz via Sarah Bartholomew via Young House Love  David Hicks via Decorpad However the thought of installing wallpaper has always made me want to just keep it a thought and not a do!:-)  It sounds so stressful trying to line it up perfectly and not to mention it can be a messy process. Additionally there’s always the thought in the back of my mind of perhaps having to take the wallpaper down someday and although I know there is an easy way to take down wallpaper it still sounds like a pain. So when I came across Peel and Stick Wallpaper while I was searching for regular wallpaper I was…

Design 101- 8 Tips to Becoming a Bookshelf Styling Pro

Design 101- 8 Tips to Becoming a Bookshelf Styling Pro

Hello!  I hope you’ve had a wonderful week! I’ve gotten some questions lately on how to style bookshelves and so today I’m going to share my 8 tips to becoming a master bookshelf stylist in your own home! This isn’t something that I intrinsically knew how to do.  It took a lot studying and some practice (and I’m sure I still have more to learn) but I am confident this post will help you decorate your bookshelves like a pro!   8 Tips to a Well-Styled Bookshelf   Tip #1. Layering–  Just like layering a room is important to creating depth and interest so is layering a shelf (the post about layering a room can be found HERE).  Layering a shelf is best achieved when you stack items on top of each other with the smallest item on the very top. via Ballard Designs   For example, if you have a beautiful decorative bowl you can add layers to it by adding a couple of large books underneath it and then another layer by putting decorative…

Beautiful Upholstered Headboard and Nailhead Trim Tutorial

Beautiful Upholstered Headboard and Nailhead Trim Tutorial

This past week I made a new headboard for my bed (as shown below)  and believe it or not it only cost $65 to make! My husband and I had been going headboardless for over 6 months (I know, audible gasp)!:-) There’s a backstory (if you don’t like backstories, no hard feelings, you can skim down to the section How to Make it ).  It all started when my husband and I began waking up achey and not fully rested.  It took a couple of weeks for us to realize that our once comfy, Deep Sleep Serta bed was no longer so comfy. It was our first purchase together as a newly married couple 12 years ago (a $400 steal at Macy’s) and we sadly realized it was time to move on to a bigger and better bed. After a ton of research on my part (I’m the researcher in the family) we decided on THIS gel memory foam mattress in soft and are back to sleeping like babies (the sound sleeping babies not the ones…

Outdoor Bench Makeover & Best $15 Sander Around

Outdoor Bench Makeover & Best $15 Sander Around

I had all intentions of writing and sharing this post last week and then life happened (namely the stomach flu, sinus problems, writing a post for another website, 4 kids, a puppy, and a kitten).  At last I am here and I truly appreciate your patience!:-) (The kitten is the easy one). Today I’m sharing a trash to treasure makeover.  It all began on a sunny afternoon as I was walking (or was the puppy walking me?) to the bus stop to gather my children off the bus.  As I got closer to the bus stop I noticed a neighbor (the dad of my son’s friend) carrying a leprous bench to the side of the road. Knowing that trash day was the next day I asked him if he was getting rid off it (always best to make sure in order to avoid an awkward situation).:-) He said yes and so I asked if I could take it and fix it up.  He answered in the affirmative and was even kind enough to carry it…

Come and Knock on My Door

Come and Knock on My Door

Hello!  I just wanted to pop in today to share a little DIY post.  With Fall close upon us time is running out for outdoor updates to the home. I recently noticed that our front door was looking pretty faded and needed a paint refresh. I am very happy with the result and was pleasantly surprised with how quick and inexpensive this project was (like as in 15 minutes and for $15)! Here is the Before.  It was so faded that our black door almost looked navy blue     And the After.  So let’s talk paint.  I was very concerned about getting a true black color and something that would hold up to all outdoor weather conditions.  When I spotted THIS Gloss Black Enamel at Home Depot for only $8 I knew it would be worth a try! And I’m so glad I did!  The pictures don’t do it justice at all.  It is a beautiful glossy black and it comes in several other beautiful colors too!   We’ve gotten a lot of compliments…

Decorating 101- How to Create a Mood Board

Decorating 101- How to Create a Mood Board

Hello!  I hope you had a great week!  This week I’ve started putting together an inspiration board (or mood board) for my upcoming laundry room makeover. If you aren’t familiar with what a mood board is– it is basically pulling pictures, paint colors, flooring samples, tile samples, furniture pieces etc. together in one spot to see how they all look in unison and to gain a clear vision for where your space is going. You can do this with actual physical materials or you can use the computer to get a virtual representation. Here are some examples of both kinds of mood boards   Real Life via Studio Mcgee via Studio Mcgee   Virtual via Young House Love via Young House Love Mood boards are fairly simple to make. 3 Steps to Creating a Mood Board 1. Search for Inspiration.  Pinterest and Houzz are great free resources for decorating inspiration.  I have Pinterest boards for each type of room in the house and when I find a space I like I pin it to that…
