Painting Laminate-One Room Challenge Week 2

Hello!  I hope you all have had a great week!

The weather has been beautiful here in Ohio this week which has been great for throwing open the windows and painting, painting, and painting some more!

This is week 2 of the One Room Challenge!  And although it is the One Room Challenge I am attempting to do Two Rooms,  my master bedroom and my daughter’s bedroom (in case you missed it you can check out the plans for the bedroom makeovers in THIS POST),

Out master bedroom has an attached “office” space.  Here is the BEFORE.

I got the desk years ago free from a friend who was moving and didn’t want to take it with her (it’s a biggie).  The hutch was a steal of a deal for only $22 from the Cincinnati Ballard Designs Outlet.

For years the two toned nature of the pair hasn’t bothered me.  But I’ve now come to the point where I’m ready for the piece to have some continuity so painting the massive laminate desk was a must!

I used the same method to paint the desk as I have used to paint cabinetry and other furniture (tutorials Here and Here) except this time instead of using a deglosser I went ahead and lightly sanded it with sand paper.

I felt sanding beforehand would do better with laminate.

Week 2 Step 1 Sand Laminate Desk

Here I have the foam roller and and Pure White Behr Semi-gloss Alkyd Enamel in hand (don’t worry I eventually had my husband help me take off the hutch and pull out the desk so I could do the entire desk).

ORC Week 2 How to Paint Laminate Furniture

I taped the carpet to protect it around the desk.

Week 2 How to Paint Laminate

Here’s one coat (looks pretty depressing at the beginning)!

ORC Week 2 One Coat of Paint on Laminate

And here’s after 4 coats (ahh much better)!  You can also notice that I painted over the stripes in this pretty gray color.

Week 2 Painted Laminate Desk

Originally I had planned to change out the hardware but to my surprise there was no way to do it so I did what any crazy determined diy-er would do.

I taped around the pulls and sprayed in in gold right there and then.

ORC Week 2 Spraying Handles

Looks like a spray paint blood bath!  After I pulled off the tape I did have to do a few touch ups in white.

Week 2 Sprau Painting Handles

So that catches you up on the master bedroom progress.

ORC Week 2 Painting Laminate After

As for my daughter’s room I was able to paint her closet doors and trim a bright white which does wonders for freshening up a room!

ORC Week 2

I was also able to paint her room her dream color, PINK!  After doing quite a bit of research I settled on Benjamin Moore’s Melted Ice Cream paint color and I must say it is the perfect pale pink.

The Perfect Pale Pink Paint Color

I love it (and not just because of it’s name)!!  I highly recommend this color if you are looking for a pale, soft pink color!

Well, I still have much to do so I best be getting at it!  What DIY or decorating projects have you been up to lately?

Feel free to check out the progress of the other One Room Challenge Participants, HERE!

Have a great rest of your week!!
