Hello! I hope you’ve had a great week!! I’m excited to share a budget bedroom makeover today, one I helped design for my friend’s 14 year old daughter, Zoe.
Zoe is the youngest of four kids and the only one at home now. The room we redid use to be her brothers.
Zoe wanted her new bedroom to feel sophisticated and beautiful and have a subtle coastal vibe (she is 14 going on 28 no teeny-bopper bedroom here).

The paint color we painted her room is Benjamin Moore Ocean Air and made a huge difference in the space. Equally important was that they painted all of the trim white (it use to be oak) and added white casing trim around the windows.
This part of the makeover was only around $50 and made the largest impact (I love the power of paint)!!
The next most important change we made was how the furniture was laid out. We took out the large dresser (painted it black and put it in her Mom and Dad’s room) that was blocking the flow of the room and centered and rotated the bed.
We also added a DIY built-in bench to the little nook in her room.
She is quite the reader so it stores her books and gives her a place to prop up a pillow and read! She wasn’t interested at this time in having a fabric covered foam top but it would make it more comfortable.
The total for making the bench seat was $40. Let me know in the comments if you would like a tutorial for the building a built in bench seat like this.
These decorative mirrors were a steal at Aldi’s $5 for a set of 3.
She purchased an all white comforter set as well as the coral accent pillows at Target. The small light green pillow was made from placemats found at Homegoods. They already had the brown fur throw at end of the bed.
The large nightstand/dresser is the only piece of furniture we brought in from her old room. The table lamp base was found at the thrift store for a couple of dollars and shade was bought from Homegoods for $12.
I discovered the clock in the clearance section at Homegoods for $8 and it really ties in nicely with the other bronze gold decor items in the room.
The light fixture adds a feeling of elegance to the space and was only $51 on Amazon. You can find it, HERE (affiliate link).
Lastly the wall art above the bed was made from a large old frame I wan’t using anymore (it use to be in my dining room). Zoe took this beautiful beach picture with her iPhone when she was on vacation in South Carolina last year.
I edited it in Photoshop Elements and had it printed at Staples for $19. We secured it to the frames background with double-sided tape.
I have to admit that I quite love Zoe’s bedroom now! As we were finishing up the details on the room I made visits often and each time I stepped into her room I would almost always do an audible sigh.
Being in such a fresh, clean, and light and airy space made me feel relaxed and content! The total cost of the makeover ended up being around $280.
Most importantly Zoe loves it! And you couldn’t find a more deserving 14 year old around!:-)
